As a parent, are you having a hard time getting your child to concentrate on his/her school assignments? If yes, worry not, you are not alone.
Why children have trouble focusing
For most children, it is hard to focus on a single subject over a couple of minutes, and that is very normal, because children being children, they tend to be inquisitive about the world around them and physically full of beans most of the time.
Be that as it may, concentration and focus are basic for schoolwork and proper understanding of any subject but different from adults, kids need alternate techniques when it comes to building of concentration levels.
As a parent, you can enable your children to build their concentration in different ways. Below, we list a few routines and techniques with which you’ll get your child to concentrate more and be less anxious while doing their schoolwork or completing assignments-
CONSOLIDATION & CONSISTENCY – RAISING YOUR CHILD’S CONCENTRATION LEVELS
Break it down
Major tasks demand heavier levels of focus and control, so it would be smart to isolate it into smaller bits that can be assimilated easily.
Taking up smaller, bite-sized tasks, which lead to the fruition of a significant task, give the sentiment of progress and development, making it simpler to concentrate.
A major assignment that requires time, commitment and heavy-duty focus, may appear too much for a child to take all at once and may cause them to hesitate even before they start studying it. With little assignments, children find that even complex tasks become simpler to study and there is less opposition when it comes to completing the big project finally.
This technique can be applied to schoolwork, assignments given at home and in the acquisition of new abilities such as creative writing or mathematical mental calculation systems.
Age Appropriateness
One of the most widely recognized reasons for young children to lose concentration is either when the subject is too hard or excessively simple. Ensure that the project or assignment is of the correct aptitude level for your kid’s age.
With younger children who tend to have shorter attention spans, research on the best age-suitable concentration/ memory games for them to play. These kinds of games can help train your little one to focus longer and with more concentration. Enable your youngster to figure out which game they enjoy the most and set aside time for it together.
Likewise, some older children may find certain subjects mentally exhausting, monotonous or overly simplistic; however, you’ll have to explain to your child that in everyday life; everybody has their cross to bear – sometimes things are repetitive and sometimes fun in turn too, but in both cases, they still need to get done.
Additionally, you’ll have to sit the child down and make them understand that the quicker the exhausting assignment is finished; the earlier they will be able to get down to doing interesting things.
Taking education a step further
At SSVM Residential School Mettupalayam, we have found that whether teaching at school or at home, one must understand that children’s minds are like wet cement – Everything leaves an impression on them. This is the time when their awareness levels are developing, and the more they learn about different subjects, the more want to know.
At SSVM Residential School Mettupalayam, we believe that education must empower every kid to move towards learning in THEIR manner – Not by force or by rote. We believe that this is the best way of creating self-reliant, independent, intelligent beings!
