Tips on remembering subject material – A children’s exam special

Yes, exam fever is a thing and yes, it happens to affect parents and children alike.

  Dealing with Exam Fever

 When the exam fever is on, children and parents go up in a race against time to complete their study quota, revise their portions, and memorize the important stuff – names, dates, diagrams, formulas, tables et al. 

Not easy, we say.

  Having said that, most educators and teachers believe half the exam battle is won when children make a ‘’ detailed organization’’ the catchword of their life. And it is true, organizing and implementing some clever study techniques do help children memorize their study material better (and make life simpler for them).

   For parents, getting the children to organize their exam material may require some exertion before it can come naturally to them, yet it’s worth the trouble. 

  Here are some tips to enable your children to improve their memory association skills and help them score top grades in their upcoming exams –

Show me & I’ll never forget

 Helping kids figure out how to use their visual memory will be the best gift you can give them. 

  As a technique relevant even for grown-ups, the sheer quantum of stuff that can be committed to memory by way of using visuals is simply astounding. Besides, the technique empowers to recollect more, in greater detail and for a longer-term. 

  But how to invoke visual memory in children, you might ask?

  Try this simple trick…

  Ask the children to envision they’re at a wedding and are getting acquainted with seven individuals fleetingly, one after another. By what method can they rapidly remember their names? 

  Tell them to select One strong, characterizing visual quality of every individual they meet and interface it with a visual portrayal of their name, ideally through activity or something to that effect. 

For instance, they can associate Sharma uncle by the broad (100 watts) smile that he has or remember baby Sirisha by the beautiful poker straight hair that she had (ruler-straight). The idea is to help them make psychological images of the characterizing qualities of those people. 

  For memorizing academic matter, teach them to practice this technique with their study material and see how rapidly they concoct inventive approaches to making visuals and connecting them with the content they’ve studied. 

Shades – Using colour codes

 Did you know that the human mind is wired to let in only little pieces of the HUGE amount of tangible data it accesses day in, day out? 

  What’s more, in a strange yet intriguing feature, the built-in wiring in our mind CHOOSES what information gets in. 

  With shades and colour memory, this built-in wiring feature gets bypassed. What this simply means is that colour coding exam material MEANS that they will overcome this built-in wiring feature exceptionally well! 

  But how to invoke colour-coded memory in children, you might ask?

 Get the kids to utilize coloured sketch pens/ marker pens/colour pencils to make colour codes on their exam material. Alternately, teach them to colour code highly significant words by underlining them with sketch pens/ marker pens. 

  Further hone this technique by teaching the children to use traffic light colours for their exam material, sorted in order of priority – so they can utilize green, orange, and red, colour-coded & duly arranged by order of significance.
